During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Challenges

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
