Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you become extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
