The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
